Finance Secretary, Republic of the Philippines
A former Undersecretary of Finance, Juanita Amatong is the first
female and 40th head of the Department of Finance.
Secretary Amatong started working for the Department of Finance
in 1971 as a senior analyst. During this time, she was concurrently
executive assistant for then Prime Minister for Finance and Monetary
Board member Dr. Cesar Virata. She was thus simultaneously handling
Department of Finance and Central Bank assignments until 1984.
In 1986, Secretary Amatong became assistant secretary at the
finance department until her appointment as undersecretary in
1992. Three years later, she joined the World Bank, becoming executive
director of an eight-country constituency that included the Philippines.
As the first woman executive director of this World Bank Group,
Secretary Amatong was recognized as a member of the elite group
of the Philippines' "First 100 Women."
Secretary Amatong also had a brief stint with the private sector
before returning to public service as undersecretary for international
finance in March 2001.
Early in her career, Secretary Amatong worked as an associate
professor at Siliman University in Dumaguete City, where she obtained
her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1955.
She also served at the International Monetary Board from 1963
to 1968, where she gained experience as a tax economist.
Secretary Amatong holds a master's degree in Economics and Public
Service from Syracuse University in New York.
