Governor, Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
Governor Amando Tetangco is a professional central banker who
has built a reputation for his technical competence and market
savvy. He is acknowledged as one of the architects of BSP's reform
agenda, including the development of the domestic capital market
and amendments to the BSP charter.
Before assuming the mantle of leadership of the BSP, Governor
Tetangco served as BSP deputy governor in charge of banking services,
economic research and treasury, and functional areas geared toward
maintaining monetary stability. In that capacity, he was directly
involved in the formulation and implementation of monetary and
foreign exchange policy of the Bank. He was also in charge of
the monitoring and management of the country's external obligations,
and the administration of existing policies on foreign loans and
investments.
The BSP governor also sits in various boards, including the National
Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board, National Food
Authority (NFA) Council, and Industrial Guarantee and Loan Fund
Review Committee.
Prior to joining the BSP in 1974, Governor Tetangco worked with
SGV & Co. for about a year.
He likewise served as alternate executive director of the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) in Washington, D.C. from 1992-1994. There,
he participated in policy-making in the IMF Executive Board and
was involved in providing economic policy advice to various governments
in the context of IMF Board meetings, and during visits to member
countries.
He has also been closely involved in the activities of various
international and regional organizations including the Executive
Meeting of East Asia and the Pacific (EMAP) Central Banks, ASEAN
and ASEAN +3, South East Asia Central Banks (SEACEN), and APEC
in the promotion of regional cooperation like the Asian Bond Fund
and the ASEAN Swap Arrangement, and economic and financial surveillance
of member countries.
Governor Tetangco finished his AB Economics degree, cum laude,
at the Ateneo de Manila University, where he also took graduate
courses in Business Administration. He obtained his MA in Public
Policy and Administration (with concentration on development economics)
from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a Central Bank scholar.
He has attended various training programs and seminars in macroeconomics,
banking and finance, portfolio management, central bank independence,
leadership and governance.
