First LGU Corn Bulk Handling Facility Launched

CAUAYAN, Isabela- The provincial government of Isabela became the first local government unit (LGU) to avail of the Sustainable Logistics Development Program (SLDP) grains highway project financed by DBP with the groundbreaking of the P115 Million Corn Integrated Production and Post harvest facilities in Tumauini last April 25, 2004.

The corn bulk handling facility was inaugurated by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and witnessed by key DBP officials led by Chairman Vitaliano N. Nañagas II, Director Alex Magno,Director Eligio Jimenez, and RMO-Northeastern Luzon Head SAVP Ed Mejorada. The corn bulk handling facility aims to promote efficient application of modern farming technologies and hasten the development of agriculture in the province of Isabela. It also supports the objectives set in the SLDP to maximize benefits to farmers, ensure food availability to end users and improve productivity and quality of life of farmers.

Financed by PM II-DBS, the corn integrated production and post-harvest facilities showcase a modern technique of farming that will increase the farmers’ income by producing premium grade corn. The project is complemented by high horsepower (120 hp), 4-wheel drive tractors that delivers the most efficient in land preparation. Coupled with newly developed implements for tilling the soil, this results to a well-cultivated soil condition conducive to massive root growth of corn.

The system boasts of six units of Combine Harvester capable of harvesting the 1,500 hectares of corn land in 35 days or less for efficient harvesting. It also has a corn drying and bulk storage plant complete with facilities for storage. In addition, satellite centers in the towns of San Manuel and in Cabagan will be established. Each center will have an 8-ton dryer and two 300-ton silos.

Governor Faustino Dy, Jr. also inaugurated four district hospitals and school projects financed by DBP in the province of Isabela under the KfW-CMSME funds. The P120 million, four district hospitals are located in the municipalities of Cabagan, Echague, Roxas and Cauayan City. The 75-bed hospitals rest on a floor area of 4,389 square meters and are equipped with various medical supplies. The Bank also extended a P40 million loan for the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment. Meanwhile, the DBP through Ilagan Branch also provided a P60 million loan for the construction of 96 units of school buildings in selected municipalities of the province to meet the standard classroom per pupil ratio in all schools in Isabela.

The Province of Isabela in partnership with DBP will construct 75-bed hospitals in four municipalities as part of its social service geared towards the promotion of efficient and adequate delivery of health services.
