DBP Bags Asian Banking Award
April 19, 2004
DBP’s Sustainable Logistics Development Program (SLDP) won as the best development project financing program in the recent Asian Banking Awards 2004 presented by the Asian Bankers Association (ABA) last March 26 at the Century Park Hotel.

The award is given to the best medium to long-term program designed or significantly enhanced the past year to develop, promote, or improve a particular industry, business sector, area, or in support of a specific government development program. DBP was cited for its SLDP which is intended to modernize the processing, storage, delivery, and the distribution of grain harvests and perishable goods of traders and farmers from Mindanao to Luzon.

DBP initiated the SLDP in 2002 as an investment financing facility for a comprehensive and integrated transportation system as well as related infrastructure and support services. The SLDP has three components: the road ro-ro terminal system, the bulk grains highway and the cold chain highway. The road ro-ro terminal system aims to make available terminals and ferry operations in identified areas such as the Roxas to Caticlan and Dumaguete City to Dagupan connections. Meanwhile, the bulk grains highway is envisioned to facilitate the transport of corn from Mindanao to Northern Luzon while the cold chain highway is aimed at re-engineering the logistics system for perishables.

The SLDP is being implemented specifically in support of the government’s Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH). The interconnection is expected to stimulate economic activities in the nearby areas by lowering transport costs and travel time, providing greater mobility for ordinary commuters and opening up new markets for agri-products and tourism-oriented SMEs.

The premiere banking awards program in the Asia Pacific region, the Asian Banking Awards recognizes and honors banks in Asia that carry out the best banking practices. Awards are given to banks in the region that, in the opinion of the board of judges and advisers, have implemented or enhanced outstanding and innovative products, services, projects and programs during the previous year. Some 107 entries submitted by 49 banks in 15 countries vied for the awards.
The Awards ceremonies took place during the Gala Dinner and Awards Night of the fifth annual Asia Pacific Bankers Congress which was participated in by hundreds of bankers, government and business leaders.
